Your toolkit for joining the ASU postdoc community

The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs is here to help you find the policies, resources and support you need as you begin your role at ASU.

Use this page as a starting point for your first steps, including onboarding, connecting with your department, reviewing the Postdoc Handbook and planning for your professional development.

Before you arrive

  1. If you are moving to Arizona or joining ASU from another institution, review ASU’s relocation resources to help prepare for your transition.
  2. If you are an international scholar, check in with the International Students and Scholars Center for guidance on immigration, arrival and scholar support requirements.

Your first week

As you begin your postdoctoral appointment, use this checklist to help you get started.

  1. Check in with your department

Connect with your department administrator or HR representative. They can help you understand any newhire paperwork, local processes or department-specific requirements that need to be completed before or soon after you begin work.

  2. Meet with your PI or supervisor

Check in with your principal investigator, supervisor or faculty mentor. They can introduce you to the people you will work with, help you become familiar with your research or work area and talk with you about expectations for your role.

You may also find it helpful to review a mentoring expectations checklist as you begin discussing communication, goals and working norms.

  3. Register for new employee orientation

Register for ASU Human Resources New Employee Orientation to learn more about university employment, benefits and resources.

  4. Plan your transportation

Explore the transportation option that works best for you. You can register for a parking permit, purchase a transit pass or review ASU bike and scooter resources.

    Parking permits
    Transit passes
    Bike and scooter resources

Your first month

  1. Review the postdoctoral scholar handbook

The ASU Postdoctoral Handbook is your primary resource for understanding postdoctoral policies, expectations and support at ASU. It includes information about: ASU policies, mentoring plans, annual evaluations, individual development plans and more.

    Read the ASU Postdoc Handbook

  2. Identify required training

Check with your local HR representative and your mentor or supervisor to identify any mandatory training you need to complete. Training requirements may depend on your funding source, research area, work environment or role.

Your required training may include areas such as lab safety, animal welfare, human subjects research, HIPAA or responsible conduct of research.

  3. Create an individual development plan

Within your first month, begin working on an individual development plan. An IDP can help you clarify your goals, identify skills you want to build and plan for your next career step.

You can use your IDP for self-management, but it is most useful when you discuss it with a trusted mentor. Your mentor can offer feedback, help you identify opportunities and support your ability to make time for professional development.
